Lesson 7. Set Up Printing and Faxing > Choose which printers appear in the Prin...

Choose which printers appear in the Print dialog box

1.
Make sure your printer is turned on and tightly connected to your Mac with the proper cables.

2.
Go to the Apple menu and choose “System Preferences….”

3.
Single-click on the “Print & Fax” icon to get the pane shown below.

4.
If you see the name of your printer in the list on the left, but it has no checkmark next to its name, check its box. Then close the preferences and try to print.

5.
If you don't see the name of your printer in the list on the left, click the + button. (Also check again to make sure the cable between the Mac and the printer is snug on both ends, and that the printer is turned on.)

This opens the “Printer Browser,” shown below, that lists every printer that is turned on and that your Mac is aware of. If you see your printer listed, single-click its name to select it, then click the “Add” button.

6.
This takes you back to the “Print & Fax” dialog box, shown on the opposite page. Make sure there is a checkmark in the checkbox next to the printer's name. Close the preferences, then try to print.

7.
If you did not see your printer listed in the “Printer Browser,” maybe you didn't install the printer software that came with the printer. Install it now, then try these steps again.

Not all printers must have the software installed. Generally, the more expensive the printer, the more likely your Mac needs the software.
