GarageBand 2: FREE UP SPACE BY LOCKING DOWN A TRACK

Once you've got a track laid down pretty much the way you want it, you can free up some of your hard disk space by locking down that track. When you lock down a track, GarageBand temporarily renders that track to disk, so it doesn't take up a bunch of RAM. To do this, click on the track you want in the Tracks column, then click the Lock icon that appears in the group of five icons. Now play the entire track by clicking the Rewind button, and then click the Play button. As it plays, GarageBand will lock the track, securing it on your drive. To unlock a track so you can make changes later, just click the Lock icon.
