Cool & the Gang: way cool tips > CREATE YOUR OWN WEB CAM

CREATE YOUR OWN WEB CAM

Want your own Web cam (of course you don't, but play along with me, will ya, cause this is actually kinda cool)? So plug in your digital video camera to your Mac's FireWire port, then aim it at something (your dog, your front door, anything but your driveway, etc.), then go to your Applications folder and open Image Capture. Open the Preferences dialog (it's found under the Image Capture menu) and click on the Sharing tab. Turn on the checkbox for Share My Devices, and you should see your digital camera listed there (if not, check the connection). Now, turn on the checkbox for Enable Web Sharing. (Note: Right below that checkbox a URL will appear [something like http://10.1.5.12:5100/]. That URL is where you will send friends to see your live broadcast on the Web.) Click OK and your Web browser will launch, taking you to that URL I mentioned earlier (if it doesn't, launch your browser and enter the URL). Once it opens, click on the Remote Monitor tab at the top of the window and you'll see a preview of what your camera is seeing. That's it—you're on the air (at least until the FCC finds out. Kidding!). Here's an extra tip: You can also use a regular digital still camera, and you can set how often (in seconds) it takes a photo and broadcasts it in the Remote Monitor tab.
