Chapter: Cheap Trick: mac os x pranks > CHANGING THE LANGUAGE FOR THEIR KEYBOAR...

CHANGING THE LANGUAGE FOR THEIR KEYBOARD

Annoyance Factor 6: This one can be as subtle or as infuriating as you'd like. For example, changing a U.S. keyboard to a U.K. keyboard is subtle. In fact, they might not even notice it that much until they go to type in a # symbol (which is Shift-3) and they get a British pound sign (£) instead. What throws them is that the # symbol is right there printed on their keyboard (right above the number 3), yet every time they press Shift-3, they get the British pound sign. Again, this is subtle, and the pound sign does give them a hint. Or you can go for something a bit more disconcerting, like changing the keyboard layout to Hungarian, which works fine until they type the letter Y, because it types the letter Z (and vice versa). Also, it really starts to get fun when they use any punctuation whatsoever. To start this international keyboard fest, go to the System Preferences under the Apple menu and choose International. Click on the Input Menu tab, and now simply click the checkbox beside one of the installed foreign keyboard layouts from the long list of languages. In the Input Source Options section, turn on the option that says “Use one input source in all documents.” Then, before you close the System Preferences, turn off the checkbox for Show Input Menu in Menubar at the bottom of the dialog, or they'll see up in their menu bar that you've changed the keyboard, and then just walk away…
