Chapter: Cheap Trick: mac os x pranks > MAKE THEIR APPLICATION FONTS LOOK BITMA...

MAKE THEIR APPLICATION FONTS LOOK BITMAPPED

Annoyance Factor 4: I gave this one a fairly low annoyance factor, because some people won't really notice it, but some people (like designers) will and it will irk them just a little every single day. Not enough to reinstall, not enough to call the IT department, but just enough to make them cringe on a daily basis. Go to the System Preferences under the Apple menu and click on the Appearance icon. When the panel appears, where it says “Turn off text smoothing for font sizes,” change the size to 12 from the pop-up menu. What this does is remove the anti-aliasing from any small text that appears within their application's palettes and other dialogs. For example, in Adobe InDesign, it makes any text in places like the Character palette look really bitmapped and awful. It's still readable, but it's painful to look at. Again and again, day after day, week after week, month after…well, you get the idea. In fact, this one is so subtle, it's just plain mean. Or bold mean, or italic mean.
