Chapter 8. Setting up Hardware > Installing a New Device

Installing a New Device

Installing a new device requires both new hardware and new software. The steps you take depend on the device’s Plug and Play status and whether Windows has an appropriate driver on hand.

Tips

  • Windows stores thousands of drivers on your hard drive (in the file \Windows\Driver Cache\i386\driver.cab) and many more on the Windows CD. Running Windows Update adds new drivers as Microsoft certifies them. See “Updating Windows XP” in Chapter 19.

  • After hardware installation, Windows—or the device manufacturer’s instructions—may ask you to restart your computer.

  • You must be an Administrator to install hardware. See “Setting up User Accounts” in Chapter 16.
