Chapter 4. Personalizing Your Work Envir... > Getting General System Information

Getting General System Information

The General tab in Control Panel’s System utility is a helpful, information-only window that displays:

  • The version of Windows installed on your computer (including Service Packs)

  • The Windows edition (Home, Professional, Server, and so on)

  • Registration information that was entered during Windows Setup

  • The type and speed of your computer’s processor

  • The total physical memory (RAM) installed on your computer

You’ll need some or all of this information when you request tech support over the phone, particularly if you’re talking to Microsoft.

To display general system information:

  • In Control Panel, choose Performance and Maintenance > System > General tab (Figure 4.89).

Figure 4.89. The General tab gives information about your Windows version, registration, processor, and RAM.
