Grouping Icons

Windows XP’s clever Show in Groups feature imposes grouping categories based on how icons are sorted. In a folder sorted by file type, for example, image files appear in one group, Microsoft Word files appear in another group, and Photoshop files in another. Sorting by size yields, say, Tiny, Small, Medium, and Large groups. Grouping is useful for scanning crowded folders.

To group icons:

  • In Windows Explorer, select a folder; then choose View > Arrange Icons By > Show in Groups (Figures 5.19 and 5.20).
