Naming Files and Folders

You can rename a file or folder to make its name longer, shorter, or more explicit.

To rename a file or folder:

1.
In Explorer or on the desktop, select the file or folder that you want to rename.

2.
Choose File > Rename.

or

Right-click the file or folder; then choose Rename.

or

In the task pane, click Rename This File (or Rename This Folder).

or

Press F2.

or

Click the file or folder’s title (not its icon) again.

3.
Type a new name; then press Enter (or click outside the name area) (Figure 5.30).

Figure 5.30. To replace the current name, just start typing. To change a few characters in the existing name, use the arrow keys to move to a specific position and then insert, delete, cut, or paste characters.
