Using the Setup Wizard

Using the Setup Wizard

All XP installations eventually converge at the Setup Wizard, which starts with the Welcome to Microsoft Windows screen and its animated question-mark icon, which you can click for help along the way. This wizard guides you through:

  • Identifying and configuring your dial-up, high-speed (DSL or cable), or network Internet connection. See Chapter 12.

  • Entering IP and DNS addresses for your network connection. See Chapter 17.

  • Activating your copy of Windows. See the next section.

  • Registering Windows. Registration is not the same thing as Activation and is optional, so click No unless you want junk email.

  • Setting up the first five user accounts (but not their passwords), if they aren’t already set up.

If you upgraded from Windows 98/Me, XP imported existing accounts as Administrators and erased their passwords.

To plug these security holes, add passwords immediately after you finish the wizard. See “Setting up User Accounts” in Chapter 16.
