Removing Programs

When you install a program, it scatters its components all over your folder structure, not just in the Program Files subfolder it creates. Only the uninstall utility of an unwanted program has the ability to remove it completely. Don’t just delete the program’s folder; if you do, you’ll leave behind shortcuts, support files, hidden folders, registry entries, and other litter on your hard drive.

Tip

  • Always exit the program that you’re going to remove. If you’re using Fast User Switching (see “Logging on and Logging off Windows XP” in Chapter 1), make sure that no other logged-on users are using the program.
