Chapter 12. Connecting to the Internet

People using a computer may have to write memos, create spreadsheets, and cook their books, but they want to browse the Web, pirate music, send email, and chat online. To do the fun stuff, you have to have your computer connected to the Internet. The New Connection Wizard simplifies this task, but honestly, hooking up to the Internet induces stress even in hardened network administrators.

As an individual, you can’t leave your self-contained PC world and connect to the Internet directly. You must pay a go-between Internet service provider (ISP) and rely on it to provide setup information, turn on your service, equip and maintain dependable connections, and help you when things go wrong.
