Practice What You Learned

In TextEdit or your favorite word processor, type the text below, or make up your own. Just type it in as you see it, with double Returns after each paragraph, then format it as you see on the opposite page.

  • To type the bullet (•), hold down the Option key and type the number 8 on the keyboard (not the number 8 in the numeric keypad).

  • Remember, when formatting on the opposite page, that every paragraph has its own ruler settings. That is, you can select the first paragraph, click the centered alignment button, and it doesn’t affect any other text on the page.


    Type two Returns to create this extra space. If you plan to do a lot of word processing, find out how to add extra paragraph spacing automatically (read the manual for your word processor). This will do two things: You won’t have to hit two Returns, only one; and you won’t have this huge gap between paragraphs because you can choose a smaller amount of space. These three “paragraphs” have only one Return between them. Yes, type this letter “t.”
