Chapter 17. Using the Trash > Taking Something out of the Trash

Taking Something out of the Trash

To remove something from the Trash, click once on the basket and you’ll find that it opens up to a window, just like any other window. So if you decide you want that item you just threw away, you can go get it. But don’t forget—you can only get items back from the Trash if you have not emptied the Trash!

  • If you change your mind directly after you throw something away, press Command Z (the “Undo” command) and the item(s) you just put in the Trash will be instantly put back where it came from.

Keep in mind that Command Z only undoes the very last action you did; that is, if you put a second file in the Trash, it is the second file that will be put back, not the first one. Or if you threw away a file and then you made a copy of a different file, Undo (Command Z) will undo the copying, not the trashing.

  • You can always open the Trash window and drag the file out of the window and put it back where it belongs, as long as you have not emptied the Trash yet.
