Computer Level

The Computer level in a Finder window shows you all the possible “storage devices,” or “volumes,” you have available. Storage devices include your own hard disk, including any “partitions” you might have separated it into (see Chapter 38 about partitions). If you are in an office or school facility that uses “servers,” or big computers that store files and send them out to other computers for others to use, you will see icons for the servers in the Computer level. You will also see any computers that you are connected to over any kind of network, such as in a small home office (the Mac considers all computers that you are connected to in any way to be “servers”).

If you have an extra hard disk attached to your Mac, such as a FireWire hard disk, its icon will appear here. Any removable disks you have “mounted” (inserted into your Mac and are now available to use) will show their icons here. So this level basically shows you every possible media that is connected to your computer at the moment, media that you can take files from or store files onto.
