The Basics > Restart, Shut Down, or Log Out

Chapter 19. Restart, Shut Down, or Log Out

If you’ve been working your way through the practice exercises in this book, you’re probably ready to Shut Down. Shutting down is the computer’s process of tying up all the loose ends inside of itself and “parking” the hard disk before it’s turned off. It is certainly possible to turn the computer off without going through the Shut Down process, but you run the risk of losing data and possibly damaging mysterious but important elements. At the very least, turning off your Mac without choosing Shut Down leaves your computer in an unstable state. So follow this simple ritual when you are finished for the day!

Sometimes you don’t want to completely shut down, but Restart or Log Out. And sometimes you want to leave it on for a week or two at a time. This chapter covers all those bases.
