Chapter 1. Finding Your Way Around

If you just got your first Macintosh or if you just installed Mac OS X and don’t know where to begin, start with this chapter. It’ll give you a visual overview of what things are and tell you where to go for more details.

  • If you just plugged in your first Mac and it’s asking how you want to get connected to the Internet, skip to Chapter 30, especially pages 502–505, and fill in the information. Then come back here.

  • If you’re new to the Mac, after you skim through this chapter, go to the Tutorial in Chapter 2. If you run across any confusing terms in either chapter, check the index to find clarification.

Remember, as a new user, all you really need to read in this book are the pages with the “dots” at the tops. Come back to the rest later.

  • If you’re an experienced Mac OS 9 user, skip to Appendix A to find out where all of your favorite features have gone.
