Permissions

First of all, before you start sharing files on your Mac you should understand what permissions are. Every file and folder has an owner (the user who created the file), a group (automatically set unless changed by a system administrator), and a set of permissions (permissions); the various permissions are described below. Unless you are on a big network, you don’t need to worry about group permissions—a system administrator can create groups, such as “screenwriters,” “readers,” and “producers,” and assign different permissions for each group so when a document is sent on the rounds, different people are limited as to what they can do with the file.

These permissions are displayed and can be changed in the Get Info window, as shown to the right.
