Why Partition?

If you have a large hard disk, you may want to think about partitioning it (separating it) into several smaller volumes (individual hard disks). This makes it easier for your computer to find what it needs, helps prevent files from becoming too fragmented, and can help your computer work faster. If you ever need to recover the data from a bad disk, it can sometimes be less expensive to recover an individual partition than to recover the entire hard disk. Or perhaps you need to install a different operating system such as Virtual PC so you can run Windows applications on your Mac—make a partition specifically for Windows stuff.

Dividing one disk into partitions can also help you keep things organized; you might have one small partition that is just for the operating system and its components, another partition for your applications, and another partition for your projects. Everything will still work together as if it was one big hard disk.
