Hierarchical Menus

In some programs the menu itself contains a pop-out menu where you not only slide down, but also out to the side, usually in the direction of the arrow. These are also known as hierarchical menus, or h-menus.

Practice:

Go to the Apple menu, as shown to the left, and position the pointer over any menu item that has an arrow to its left. Practice moving your mouse over to the right and sliding down the hierarchical list—it can be tricky!

Don’t click on any command yet unless it has an ellipsis in the menu (see page 58), which means you will get a dialog box that you can cancel out of.
