Chapter 39. Using the Classic Environment

Mac OS X is a fabulous operating system. But you still might have an app or two that hasn’t been revised to run in OS X. So the Mac will open and run the OS 9 operating system in what is called the Classic environment. Applications that can’t run in Mac OS X will automatically open in Mac OS 9. These applications are considered “Classic applications.”

If you have Mac OS X on your machine but you start up your Mac with OS 9 most of the time, you’ll need to know more about OS 9 than is in this chapter. If so, please read The Little Mac Book, seventh edition, from Peachpit Press.
