Personal

The Personal set of System Preferences are those that change the look of your screen and its various parts, which include the Desktop, Dock, General, and Screen Effects panes. This is also where you access the Login Items preferences for multiple users. The International preferences can change the language that appears in all the menus, dialog boxes, and even on the keyboard. These are either explained below, or there is a note telling you where else in the book you will find detailed information.

Desktop

Use the Desktop preferences to change the color of your background on the monitor. Instead of a color, you can choose a photograph or an abstract image. You can also use any photo or graphic image of your choice. Just put that photo or image in your Pictures folder, then choose “Pictures Folder” from the Collection menu (circled, below) to add the photo. For details on how to use these Desktop preferences, see pages 127–128.
