Chapter 33. Chat with iChat > Chat with Several Buddies at Once

Chat with Several Buddies at Once

A Chat Room is different from an Instant or Direct Message in that you can have a number of people around the world in the same “room” (which looks amazingly like an Instant Message window) all chatting at once. Here are your options:

  • You can create a new Chat Room with a unique name and invite a large number of people to join you. Mac.com members, AOL members, and AIM users can all be invited into the Chat Room. (The limit in America Online is 23 people in a room, but I am not sure what the limit is in iChat.) Caps and lowercase don’t matter when typing the name of a new Chat Room.

  • You can join an existing Chat Room that another Mac.com member has created if you know the exact name of the room. (You cannot join any Chat Room that an AOL member has created within AOL.)

Note: If you enter the name of a Chat Room that other Mac.com users in the world have already set up, you will land in their room! So you want to be sure to type the correct name of the room you want to join. Caps and lowercase don’t matter when typing the name of an existing room.
