Chapter 7. All About Icons > Fancy Folders

Fancy Folders

Many of the folders you see are identified with special icons. These fancy folders are created by the Macintosh operating system and they have special functions. Below you see the folders that are in your Home window. If more than one person uses the computer, each person can have his or her own Home window and their own set of these folders. Anything a user puts in these folders is accessible only to that user, with the exception of the Public folder; whatever is put in the Public folder is accessible to anyone using the machine. Please see Chapter 9 for details about each of these folders, and Chapter 20 for details about how to add more users to your Mac.

The Desktop and Home icons are actually folders, but their icons have been totally changed. Don’t change the names of any of these folders! Many of them have very specific purposes that depend on their names.
