Chapter 9. Mac OS Utilities > Java Web Start

Java Web Start

Java Web Start is an application that enables you to run full-featured Java applications from within a Web browser window. You simply click the link for an application to put Java Web Start to work. First, it checks to see if the application exists on your computer. If not, it downloads it. Next, it checks to see if the downloaded version is the most recent. If not, it updates it. It caches the program’s information so the program can be launched at any time. Finally, it loads the application and displays its windows, menus, and other interface elements.

Tips

  • Java Web Start was created by Sun Microsystems, developer of the Java programming language. As this book went to press, the technology was only about a year old. You can learn more about it and run demos at java.sun.com/products/javawebstart/.

  • Java Web Start works with files that have the .jnlp or .jar extension.
