Chapter 6. AppleScript Basics > Objects & References to Them

Objects & References to Them

Objects are the things in applications, AppleScript, and Mac OS that respond to script commands. Application objects are objects stored in applications and their documents, such as text objects, database objects, and graphic objects. Objects can contain data in the form of values, properties, and elements that you can access or change from your scripts.

Each object belongs to an object class. Each object class is a category for objects that defines their properties and elements you can access from AppleScript. Object classes include applications, documents, windows, databases, fields, graphic elements, and characters. Dictionaries define object classes and indicate the object’s properties and elements that can be set. Properties contain values, and elements are themselves objects that can be referenced separately from your script.
