Scriptable Applications & Their Dictionaries

Any Macintosh application that supports AppleScript must have a dictionary (Figure 5). The dictionary defines the commands that the application will understand in Apple-Script, from the most basic commands (such as Open) to commands that are unique to the application.

Dictionaries also define all objects that you can reference with commands. Objects include things such as database records and fields, words and paragraphs in text documents, objects in drawing programs, and URLs in Web browsers.
