At 10:20 p.m. on Friday, August 23, 2002, Mac OS X became a real operating system. Previously, it had been a nice attempt that still lacked some essential features, such as the ability to easily connect to Microsoft Windows networks.

I know the exact time for this because it’s when Apple Stores began selling the new 10.2 version to hundreds, perhaps thousands, of the faithful who gathered for the in-store launch parties. Those attending in Palo Alto, not far from Apple’s Cupertino campus, actually got a glimpse of Steve Jobs, who has rock-star status among the really hard-core Mac users.
