Moving Your Favorites

If you use Microsoft Internet Explorer on Windows, you’ll be happy to know that it’s also available on the Macintosh (Apple also offers its own fine browser, called Safari). It’s easy to move your Favorites from the PC to the Mac, but it’s not necessarily something I recommend.

Why? Because your Mac browser comes preloaded with a few zillion useful Mac links already (and see Appendix B for a few more). You can find a list of them at www.apple.com/switch/howto/mac/applefavorites.html, where you will also find instructions for adding specific links back into Internet Explorer on your Mac. I’d rather see you keep the existing links on the Mac and re-create the links you want from your PC, and here’s why. Unless you’re hyperorganized, I’ll bet your PC favorites aren’t really that useful, including perhaps half a dozen links you really care about. Better to add those URLs manually on your Mac than to wipe out all the helpful links Apple provides.

But if you must copy over all the useful links, here’s how.

On the PC:

1.
With Internet Explorer running, choose File > Import and Export.

2.
In the Export dialog (Figure 4.4), save the file as Favorites.html in the Favorites folder you will burn onto the Switch CD.

Figure 4.4. Here’s what it looks like when you begin exporting your favorites from your Windows machine.

On the Mac:

1.
Put the Switch CD in your Mac’s optical drive, and open it when it mounts on your Desktop.

2.
Open the Favorites folder on the CD.

3.
With the Finder active, choose Go > Home (or press Command-Shift-H; see Figure 4.5), and then navigate to Library > Preferences > Explorer.

Figure 4.5. One way to get to your home folder is to choose Home from the Go menu (or use the keyboard shortcut combination, shown on the right).

4.
Drag the Favorites.html file from the Favorites folder on the CD to the Explorer folder you just opened. If you’re asked if you want to replace the file, say yes.

Just know that in the battle between the Mac and Windows, you’ve now committed a war crime.
