Chapter 5. Meet Your Macintosh > Can I Install More Memory in My Mac?

Can I Install More Memory in My Mac?

Yes. Although some Macs come with memory that requires a service technician to upgrade, some you can upgrade yourself. For example, getting to the iMac’s full 1 GB of RAM capacity requires a trip to the service center, although you can get to 512 MB of RAM without a service technician’s assistance. Desktop Macs are easier to upgrade, and unlike those from the olden days, Macs now use standard PC memory, so adding more RAM isn’t nearly as expensive as it used to be.

The precise type of memory your Mac uses may be different from the model before or even an earlier release of the same model, so always check to make sure you are buying the right memory for your specific model. Fortunately, there are many online sources of Mac memory, so finding the right type shouldn’t be too difficult.
