This book grew out of a fight between Natalie Sequeira and myself. Nat works for Apple PR and is, fight aside, a sweetheart. I should have fights that turn into books more often, I suppose. The Apple PR staff has a tough job—and it’s not just dealing with me.

There are a zillion other people to thank at Apple, but I want to mention here one person by name—Keri Walker—who runs the editorial loan program that keeps the Macintosh in front of the media. Keri has done as much as any single person I know, save Steve Jobs, to promote Apple’s cause.

I want to thank my sweetheart, Elionora Bjuhr, for putting up with me during the months it took to get this book together. She and my two children, Larry and Mo Coursey, were most understanding during the times I was somewhat less than pleasant while trying to kick out another chapter. I feel much better now that this book is done.

Thank you to my AnchorDesk colleagues—Pat, Dan, Sylvia, and Candy—for their tolerance of a columnist turned first-time author. Also to Brian and Christy and the rest of the CNET Radio crew.

Cliff Colby has been a most patient editor. Much more than a disorganized author could hope for. He made important contributions to this book. Thanks also to Connie Jeung-Mills, who handled the production of this book and created something really nice out of a zillion Word documents. If you are thinking about writing a computer book, Peachpit is a great group of folks to work with. It’s always nice to call around and find out that the very first offer was more than fair. Those are people you go out of your way to work with.

Thanks also to Lisa Halliday, Ernie Mariette, and Ron Johnson for their help along the way. And to Tiffany, Jody Wickett, Rhonda Holland, David Pogue, Deb McAlister, Rob Enderle, Tim Bajarin, Michael J. Miller, Jim Louderback, Jim Strothman, Jim Casella, Stewart Alsop, Lois Breedlove, Ben Harold, Doug Michels, Philippe Kahn, Ed Ring, Chris Hayes, Allan Coursey, Russ Van Kirk, Shannon O’Brien, Theresa Vernon, Fred Varian, Kimberly Brown, and Sally Atkins. If you are not on this short list, it doesn’t mean you aren’t important to me—just that I am past deadline. As usual.

Special thanks to Dr. George Reed, without whom this book would not have been possible.

And finally, thanks to Apple’s Lindsey Chow and Jerry Hsu and to the Apple Switchers who gave so generously of their time to help me write a book that future Switchers will hopefully find useful.
