User Accounts

Let's say you have programs that you use to keep track of your personal finances, but you don't want your kids or other members of your household to access those programs. You can set it up so that those programs show up in your Start menu, but not in the Start menu of other users. You can also create your own environment—your own screen saver, your own desktop, even your own customized version of many programs. You might, for example, want to install a program that keeps your kids away from inappropriate content on the Internet (see Chapter 51) but not put such restrictions on the accounts used by adults. And you might also want to assign a password to each member of your family so that other people (your kids' friends, for example) can't mess with your files or programs. All of this customization is done by creating separate user accounts through this section of the Control Panel.

Adding and Changing User Accounts

The process of adding, changing, and deleting user accounts is pretty straightforward. To create a user account you have to have “computer administrator” privileges. This means that you need to be signed on in an account that's set up for an administrator. If you were the one who set up your PC, then you probably do have administrator privileges.
