Chapter 26. The Windows XP Desktop > Cleaning Your Desktop

Cleaning Your Desktop

Windows XP also provides a feature that automatically “cleans” your desktop by moving icons to a folder. (I wish I had someone to do that for my actual desktop.) To access this feature, click the Start menu, select Control Panel, and click on Appearance and Themes. Now click Change the Desktop Background, then Customize Desktop, and finally Clean Desktop Now. Any icons on the desktop will be tidied into the Unused Desktop Shortcut folder on your desktop.

You can also remove shortcuts and icons on your own, if you like, by dragging them onto the Recycle Bin icon. Removing an icon is not the same thing as deleting a program or file. Icons, in most cases, are just shortcuts that point to a file. The file is still there, even after you “throw away” the icon.
