My Documents

The My Documents icon is a shortcut to the folder where Windows XP keeps all of your files. If you've used Windows 95, 98, or Me, you may already be familiar with the My Documents folder, but this one is a bit different. For one thing, Windows XP is a multi-user operating system that allows more than one person to share a computer. So everyone who shares your computer has his or her own individual My Documents folder. The My Documents folder that you see here is for you only.

Many programs, including Microsoft Office, will automatically store files in My Documents. What's more, if you click My Documents, you'll find two other folders inside: My Music and My Pictures. You might find it confusing that there are icons in the Start menu for My Music and My Pictures, as well, but there's a simple explanation: They're all shortcuts to the My Music and My Pictures folders and it's possible to have more than one shortcut to the same folder. In fact, it's very helpful.
