Choosing Software

If you do decide that you need more software in a particular category, you'll most likely find lots of different programs that do pretty much the same thing. Here are some general things to consider before you choose a software package.

What Will XP Run?

One of the nice things about XP is that it runs most of the programs designed for Windows 98, Windows Me, and Windows 2000. It won't run all of them, though, especially older games and programs that were designed specifically for earlier versions of Windows. Most software boxes and Web site download areas (and many software reviews) will list the program's minimum system requirements—the hardware and software you'll need to run the program. If you have a program that you absolutely must run and it doesn't say it works with Windows XP, check with the software developer before you upgrade to XP to make sure your program will still work. Some manufacturers made modifications to make sure their products would support XP, but they might not have updated the information yet.
