Stand By

Stand By doesn't actually turn off the PC, it just puts it into a low power “sleep” mode. The monitor will go dark, the disk drive will stop spinning, and the machine's CPU will go into a very low power state. About the only thing that keeps working is the memory that stores information. If your machine is in Stand By you can get it going again very quickly when it's time to resume using it. (With most PCs, you just move the mouse to wake it up from sleep mode. Others, including most laptops, require you to push a button.)

You can also configure your machine to go into Stand By automatically. Go to the Control Panel, select Performance and Maintenance and then Power Options.
