Laptop vs. Desktop

Laptop or notebook PCs combine all of a system's components into a single, portable unit. They look different, but they have essentially the same components as desktop machines—just smaller. There was a time when the term “notebook PC” referred to a lighter portable PC, and the term “laptop” to a slightly heavier unit. But machines keep getting lighter and you won't find too many of those bigger machines around anymore, so the terms are pretty interchangeable now.

Lots of people like the idea of a laptop computer, because they can take it with them wherever they go. You can carry it from your office to your home, take it on trips, and even use it on planes and commuter trains. People who work by themselves look forward to working at the beach, in the park, or in the neighborhood cafe. And yes, all that is possible. Even though I wrote most of this book on my desktop PC, I worked on parts of it on planes, in hotel rooms, and from a local coffee shop, thanks to my notebook PC.
