Chapter 56. My Favorite Sites > Finding Phone Numbers, Addresses, and Maps

Finding Phone Numbers, Addresses, and Maps

Here's the 411 on finding phone numbers: You no longer need to call 411, which means you don't have to pay a fee to your phone company every time you want to look up a number. What's more, you can also get the address of any residence or place of business, plus a map to get you there.

There are a number of sites where you can look up numbers. My favorite is www.switchboard.com, because it's easy to use. It lets you search the entire United States, even if all you have is the person's last name. You can narrow down the search by entering the first name or initial, as well as the state or city. There is also a separate business search which lets you search for businesses by name or category. Of course, it won't find unlisted numbers and it may not be completely up to date, so if it's really important and you can't find it on switchboard.com, you can try other services or—if you're desperate—call directory assistance.
