LCD Monitors

There are some advantages and disadvantage to choosing an LCD (liquid crystal display) monitor over CRT.

Desktop LCD monitors use basically the same technology as laptop LCD screens. In both cases, most models use what is known as active-matrix thin-film transistor (TFT). Each dot or pixel on the monitor is actually made of three tiny transistors: one each for red, green, and blue. There's no gun scanning up and down or left and right, so you don't have the flicker effect you get with a CRT. (You can't usually detect that flicker but some experts say that it contributes to eye strain and fatigue.) Another advantage is that LCD screens give off fewer of the electromagnetic emissions that can interfere with other equipment or, according to some people, have an effect on health. (There's a lot of controversy on that last point.)
