Chapter 20. Modems: Dial-Up, Broadband, ... > Broadband: Life in the Fast Lane

Broadband: Life in the Fast Lane

In addition to a standard dial-up modem, you may be able to connect to the Internet even faster using a broadband service, such as a cable modem (that connects to your cable TV system) or digital subscriber line (DSL, a high-speed service that uses standard phone lines).

In addition to speed, another advantage of a broadband connection is that it gives you a full-time connection to the Internet. This means that your PC is connected to the Internet whenever you turn it on, and you don't have to log on first to go to a Web site. Most dial-up services offer a flat-rate monthly (or longer) service.
