Chapter 20. Modems: Dial-Up, Broadband, and Fax > Sharing Your Phone with a PC

Sharing Your Phone with a PC

Before you buy a modem, consider its effect on your phone service. If you're using your computer and modem a lot, you may need at least one extra line. This is especially true if you have a fax modem.

If you plan to use your modem only for short periods, you can probably get away with a single line. Remember, however, that when you're online, your phone is busy. If your phone line has a call-waiting feature and someone calls while you're receiving a fax, your fax transmission will be interrupted. (In most areas, you can turn off call waiting for the duration of outgoing calls or faxes.)
