Chapter 48. Games > Ratings

Ratings

Most commercial games these days are rated, just like movies. As with movies, the ratings are a guideline for parents, not an absolute rule. You'll have to decide for yourself what your kids can handle, since only you know what values you wish to instill.

There has been some talk about the role of video games in teen violence. While there's no credible evidence that violent games cause children to commit acts of violence, there is certainly evidence that playing certain types of games leads to more aggressive behavior. My advice to parents is to get to know the games your children play. Don't overreact if the game has a bit of violence, but watch for signs that could indicate problems. (After all, the Westerns I watched as a kid had plenty of shooting, and I'm no homicidal maniac.) If your children are obsessed with games, even gentle games, or exhibit inappropriate behavior, you might consider changing their software and media diet.
