One of most controversial, yet potentially powerful, aspects of Windows XP is Microsoft's decision to link it to the company's “Dot Net” (.Net) strategy. In a nutshell, Microsoft.net takes advantage of the company's operating system to engage you in commerce.

Eventually, Microsoft will start offering software packages, including versions of Microsoft Office, that run over the Internet instead of on your PC. That way, instead of buying Microsoft Office, you subscribe to it and can use it over the Internet from any machine.
