Chapter 45. Digital Photography > Types of Photo Files

Types of Photo Files

There are a number of different formats used to store photos.

JPEG is the most popular format (it stands for stands for Joint Photographic Experts Group). The files will have the extension .jpg. What's important to know about JPEG is that it is a “lossy” compressed file format. That means that it saves space on your hard drive and (if you upload them) on the Internet because the file is compressed or made smaller. Lossy means that you do lose quality when you compress with JPEG. But the good news is that most people will never notice the difference between a JPEG file and an uncompressed file.
