Getting Digital Music

There are a number of ways you can get your hands on digital music to play on your PC or record to CD. The two most common are copying music files from CDs and downloading files from the Internet.

Copying files from CDs you own is perfectly legal as long as it's for your own personal use. But downloading music has been a controversial topic. You've no doubt heard about Napster and all of its legal battles. Napster is a service that allows people to use special software to share music over the Internet. The service was basically shut down by court order after a number of record companies filed a lawsuit. Napster had plans to re-emerge, but as I was finishing this book it wasn't clear whether that would happen. In the meantime, several other services emerged to take Napster's place and, as you might expect, the recording industry made noises about those as well.
