Chapter 42. Installing and Uninstalling Software

When you get a new program, your first task is to install it on your computer. “Install” is an ominous-sounding term that evokes images of a service person with a truck, a set of tools, and specialized skills. But installing programs is generally quite easy, especially now that most software comes with a special installation program.

Usually, an install program for an application program creates new folders, copies the application files from the original CD-ROM to your hard disk, and makes any necessary changes to your Windows configuration. The installation program prompts you for the information it needs to configure the software so that it works on your machine. In most cases, the install program runs automatically when you first insert the CD-ROM.
