Sound Card

Whether you have a laptop or a desktop PC, your computer has either a sound card or sound chips built into it. Either way, there are some connectors at the back of your machine for speakers (or headphones) and a microphone. Some PCs have extra line in connectors for plugging in an external sound source like a CD-player. Some have extra line out ports (for an amplifier) or a digital line out port for digital sound systems. Even if your system doesn't have a special line in or line out connector, you can still use the headphone (speaker) jack to send sound to a stereo system. You may also be able to use the microphone jack as a line-in connector. However, if you do use these jacks, be sure you set your sound levels appropriately.
