Chapter 9. Choosing the Right Computer > You Don't Need a Brand Name

You Don't Need a Brand Name

Does the brand name make a difference? There was a time when I would have told you to stay away from “no-name brands,” but those days are over. To be good, a PC company doesn't have to be big. It's now possible for a neighborhood PC dealer to assemble a quality computer that stands up against those from the likes of IBM, Dell, Gateway, Compaq, and other big-name companies.

The advantages of dealing with well-established companies usually (but not always) include a nationwide guarantee, telephone support, and the peace of mind of that comes from knowing that you're dealing with a stable company. My advice is not to get too hung up on the name, but to judge each computer on its qualities and on how well its manufacturer backs it up.
