Chapter 22. Accessories: Making Yourself... > Uninterruptible Power Supply

Uninterruptible Power Supply

So what happens when the power suddenly goes out while you're using your computer? Well, your computer shuts down instantly and everything you're working on is lost unless it's been saved to disk. One way to avoid that is to get an uninterruptible power supply (UPS) that will keep your PC going for a few minutes, giving you time to save your work and shut down your machine. Low-cost UPS devices such as the $79 Back-UPS Office 350 from APC (www.apc.com) will keep a standard computer and monitor running for about 11 minutes. That's not enough time to finish your novel, but it is sufficient to save your file and shut down your computer. Make sure you plug your monitor as well as your PC into the UPS, but don't bother connecting the printer.
