Surge Protectors

Surge protectors are designed to insulate your computer from electrical surges that can happen during lightning storms, when your refrigerator's motor kicks in, or for no reason at all. Some electrical engineers I've spoken with claim that surge protectors are not necessary because circuits inside your PC's power supply will automatically protect your system in case of an electrical surge; others claim that they're very important. I think they're a good idea, especially if the power in your area is unsteady (I live in California where we have “rolling blackouts”). You can get surge protectors for about $20, but the more expensive ones offer better protection. Surge protectors are rated in joules, and the higher the number the better. You'll get basic protection at 200 joules, but there are products that go much higher (over 600 joules) and give much better protection.
